Rhinoplasty

A beautiful nose isn’t necessarily the tiniest or the most symmetrical, but the one that complements your features without standing against them. Rhinoplasty, sometimes known as nose job or nose surgery, improves the appearance and proportion of your nose to enhance facial harmony.

Understanding Rhinoplasty

Your nose is an incredibly important feature of your face that contributes directly to your overall facial harmony. And because it is such a prominent attribute, disliking its shape, size, or overall appearance can be a major source of insecurity.

Rhinoplasty is the medical term for “nose reshaping,” or “nose job.” It is one of the most nuanced and complex plastic surgeries because it requires exceptional skill and a deep understanding of facial aesthetics.

You’ve probably seen countless botched nose jobs that look too obvious, drawing negative attention to the person’s face. But the ultimate goal of a good rhinoplasty is to go undetected and flow seamlessly with the natural contours of your face. A natural nose job should look like a refined, more symmetrical version of your own nose and address structural asymmetries and functional issues, like:

  • Wide, flared, or pinched nostrils
  • A crooked or tilted nose
  • Drooping, bulbous, or protruding nose tip
  • Prominent bumps
  • Trouble breathing
  • Dissatisfaction with its shape or size

Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty include non-smoking men and women who are in good health but are unhappy with the shape or size of their nose. It’s also important that you have realistic expectations for the procedure. While nose surgery can dramatically improve the appearance of your nose, the best results are achieved when the enhancement matches your own facial proportions.

Although there’s no established age for nose surgery, it’s important that your nose has finished developing and that you are mature enough to know for sure you want to permanently change your nose. Teenage girls are typically eligible for rhinoplasty starting at age 15 or 16 and teen boys as early as 16 or 17.

What to Expect During Rhinoplasty

At Dr. Patty Miami, our goal with rhinoplasty is to sculpt a nose that you absolutely adore every time you look in the mirror. As such, we believe there’s no one standard for a beautiful nose.

During your initial consultation, a board-certified cosmetic surgeon will evaluate your nasal structure and facial aesthetics to create a tailor-made surgical plan designed to achieve the look that you desire. At this appointment, you and your surgeon will decide which approach is most appropriate for your desired outcome.

Open Rhinoplasty

Overview: Open rhinoplasty involves making a small incision in the soft tissue that separates the nostrils, called the columella. It gives your surgeon the most flexibility for modifying and repositioning the nose, and it is the most appropriate technique for noses that are very crooked or that protrude out too far off the face.

Incisions: Hidden within the columella, only visible from up close.

Surgery time: 1.5 hours

Anesthesia: General

Recovery: Being a slightly more invasive approach than closed rhinoplasty, expect significant swelling and bruising the first couple of weeks following your procedure. A nasal splint will be applied for 5 to 7 days after surgery. Once the splint is removed, swelling and bruising will subside until it fades within a month. Your nose will continue to heal over the next year.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Overview: A closed rhinoplasty approach is appropriate when the nose is straight when viewed from the front and only needs minor refinements. It is a great alternative if you want to have minimal downtime or are concerned about scarring because all incisions are made within the nose.

Incisions: Within the nose, so the scars will not be visible from any angle.

Surgery time: 1 hour

Anesthesia: General or local with twilight sedation

Recovery: A closed rhinoplasty involves less trauma to the nose, which means shorter recovery times. You may be able to return to your social activities as soon as 2-3 days after your procedure and resume work within a week. As with open rhinoplasty, your nose will continue to heal and adapt to its new shape, so it may take up to a year for the final results to show.

All nose surgeries are completed at our upscale surgical and cosmetic boutique in Miami. Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under general or local anesthesia with sedation, so you will need to ask someone to accompany you and drive you home after the surgery. If you are coming from out of town, your dedicated surgical concierge can help you arrange a stay at a luxurious and comfortable recovery retreat.

Rhinoplasty FAQs

How Much Is Rhinoplasty in Miami?

Rhinoplasty is never covered by health insurance because it is considered a cosmetic procedure. A septoplasty, which is a medical surgery to correct breathing, will likely be covered by insurance if your doctor deems it necessary.

Are Nose Jobs Covered by Insurance?

Contrary to what it may seem, rhinoplasty is not a very painful procedure. You will experience some swelling and bruising during the first few days, but you will probably feel much better than you look. Your Dr. Patty Miami cosmetic surgeon will provide you with a custom recovery protocol complete with prescription pain medications and tips for managing soreness and discomfort at home.

Is Rhinoplasty Recovery Painful?

Swelling after rhinoplasty usually peaks 5-7 days after surgery and gradually subside over the next few weeks. Within a month, most of the swelling will have gone down and the rest will continue to improve over the following 6 months to a year.

How Long Will Bruising and Swelling Last?

Avoid lifting anything heavy, including children, for at least one month after your rhinoplasty surgery in Miami. You can start easing back into light exercise at the three-week mark.

How Soon after Rhinoplasty Can I Exercise?

Every surgical procedure has associated risks, including rhinoplasty. While uncommon, complications may include:

  • Nerve damage
  • Bleeding
  • Reactions to anesthesia
  • Suboptimal results
